The final milestone before beginning your airline pilot career is obtaining the Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate. This is the highest level of pilot certificate obtainable and remarkable achievment.

If you’re planning to fly for the airlines then by now you’ve already decided you need your ATP certficiate. Combined with a commercial certificate and your instrument rating, along with being at least 23 years of age and of good moral character (seriously that’s an FAA requirements), all you need now are the minimum flight hours and to pass the written and practical tests and your set.

Airline Transport Pilot (ATP)
Getting an ATP is not for everyone, but it is required if you plan to fly for the airlines (big or small), it’s also the final milestone along the journey in terms of FAA certificates. It covers a myriad of subjects including weather, aerodynamics, air carrier ops, and prepares candidates for multi-pilot envoirments.
Career
The pinnacle of becoming a commercial pilot is going to the major airlines, such as Delta, United, American Airlines, etc. Once the commercial pilot has 1500 hours of Pilot in Command time, they are now eligible to start working for the airlines.
Compensation
A hot topic among pilots is the pay scale for airline pilots. Once at the major airlines, it is projected for a pilot to make well of $200,000 a year, with minimal hours worked.
Travel
As an Airline Transport Pilots, the destinations are endless! You have the option of flying domestic legs, LAX to JFK for example, getting to explore the Big Apple. Or if you like going abroad, taking the long hauls from Los Angeles to Paris, exploring Europe on your time off until your next flight back to the states.

FAA REQUIRMENTS
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language.
- Hold a U.S. student pilot certificate & FAA approved medical
- Receive a logbook endorsement from an authorized instructor who conducted the training in areas listed in §61.105(b); and certified that the person is prepared for the required knowledge test
- Pass the knowledge test
- Receive flight training and a logbook endorsement from an authorized instructor who conducted the training in the areas of operation listed in §61.107(b) of this part that apply to the aircraft rating sought; and certified that the person is prepared for the required practical test
- Pass the practical test
AERONAUTICAL EXPERIENCE
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE
- 1500 hours total flight time
- 500 hours cross country PIC
- 100 hours of night flight time
- 75 hours of instrument flight time
- 20 night take offs and landings
- 3 hours of flight training within 2 calendar months of the practical test with an authorized instruction
